Protesters Call for Boycott of Disney ‘Mulan’ Film Because Star Liu Yifei Supported Repressive Hong Kong Police: Report
Pro-democracy activists in Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan are calling for a boycott of the Disney live-action remake of “Mulan” because the star, Liu Yifei, supported Hong Kong police in 2019 when they were using excessive force against citizens, reports The Guardian:
Liu had reportedly posted a message on the Chinese social media site Weibo, which translated as: “I also support Hong Kong police. You can beat me up now.” In English she added: “What a shame for Hong Kong.” The post was an apparent reference to chants heard by pro-police activists demonstrating in support of a journalist who was beaten by pro-democracy protesters.
The release of “Mulan” has been postponed several times because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The film will now be released on the streaming service Disney+.
