Gina Rodriguez Says Black Actresses Get Paid More Than Asian And Latina Stars, Outrage Follows
Actress Gina Rodriguez said that black actresses get paid more than Asian and Latina female stars during a discussion with fellow TV actress Ellen Pompeo, Gabrielle Union and Emma Roberts on Porter:
I get so petrified in this space talking about equal pay especially when you look at the intersectional aspect of it, right?
Where white women get paid more than black women, black women get paid more than Asian women, Asian women get paid more than Latina women, and it’s like a very scary space to step into.
Because I always feel like I fail when I speak about it because I can’t help but feel already so gracious to do what I do and I feel like, culturally, I feel like I was raised to just feel so appreciative of getting here.
In response, Rodriguez got pounded on Twitter:
Re: regarding Gina Rodriguez saying Black actresses are paid more than Latinx actresses – Sofia Vergera is the highest paid according to Forbes ($42 .5mil). Kerry Washington is the only Black actress on this list at #8: https://t.co/MrkiGDC0c2

The problem with Rodriguez’s comments is that Latinx is not a race. There are black Latinx women. There are brown and indigenous Latinx women. There are white Latinx women. There are undocumented Latinx women. She’s erasing the women who actually DO earn less, but are typically many shades darker than her or do not have her same citizenship status.
Again:
But this is far from the first time she’s been under fire for comments like these. For example, here’s a similar complaint from September:
Gina really needs to take a seat and listen if she wants to learn and avoid this kind of backlash in the future.
